Composer, Choirmaster, Director of Conservatories, Music Theory and Composition Professor.
Born in Patra in 1946, Kloggas began his musical pursuits at 8 years of age by enrolling at the Bandina (Municipal Band for the young), under K. Karydakes’ musical direction – his first instructor in music, and later under K. Vafeiades – playing the French Horn. Soon after that, and due to his outstanding performance, Kloggas conducted half of the Bandina (40 members) in several performances, while in 1962 he joined the Band (Municipal Band for professional musicians), following entrance examinations in which he achieved the highest marks. Kloggas became Second French Horn, as well as assistant to the First French Horn of the Band, under the musical direction of V. Sozopoulos and T. Kavouras.
In September of 1960 he enrolled at the Hellenic Conservatory (Patra chapter) in piano studies. Five and a half years later he attained his first degree (Singing), having studied Choral Technique and Harmonium with D. Sinoures.
Kloggas was the recipient of the Patra Municipality scholarships (available to a total of six students from all three conservatories at the time) during the complete duration of his conservatory studies.
From the age of 12 Kloggas has been a chorister in several Church Choirs (Byzantine and not) at the Metropolis (Evaggelistria – Byzantine), and the Pantanassa – 4-part male choir. Later, he became a member of the male choir Orpheus under D. Sinoures’ musical direction. Around the same time, he became a member of the Conservatory’s mixed choir, as well as Assistant Director to D. Sinoures. In addition, he often directed the local high school’s choir in several of its concerts.
Membership in all those choral ensembles allowed Kloggas to participate in concerts in Patra (for example, in the Municipal Hall and the Ancient Theatre), the Herod Atticus Theatre (Athens), as well as in other prestigious halls.
In 1964 he was offered the Organist’s position at Patra’s Catholic Church, and became the Director of the church’s mixed choir (15 members). In addition to concerts in Patra, the ensemble was invited to sing outside the city limits, such as in the city of Piraeus for example. During the same time, he was invited to play as French Horn soloist at a concert of the Mandolinata Mixed Choir and Orchestra, in a performance of W. A. Mozart’s Mass in C minor.
Kloggas continued his music studies in Athens under M. Vourtsis (Harmony), Sotos Vasileiadis (Counterpoint and Orchestration), D. Dragatakis (Counterpoint and Fugue), and M. Travlos (Music Composition). He also sang in the Athens Conservatory’s Choir, while participating in many concerts as accompanist to many artists, such as Fakitsas, Vafias, Koundoures, and Galanides, among others.
Kloggas has contributed many articles to several Patrian and Athenian newspapers on music and culture related topics.
In 1986, Kloggas created the Orpheus Conservatory in Athens, and became the Artistic Director. He also became the A.D. at the Varvitos Conservatory in Kifissia, the Aenaon Conservatory in Helioupolis, and the Aenaos Music School in Vyronas. He also founded the Orpheus Conservatory Mixed Choir, which he has since directed in many concerts.
In 1997, he was offered the position of Substitute Director of the Panhellenic Association of Church Music ‘Ioannis Sakellarides’ of Athens’ mixed choir, and in 1999 he became the full Director. In 2000, Kloggas became the Association’s Vice President.
With this choir, Kloggas has conducted, or performed on piano and harmonium in concerts in Greece and abroad (Athens, Piraeus, Corfu, Sparta, Karpenissi, Avlonari and Orio in Euboea, Venice, as well as Tarascon and Avignon in France).
Kloggas conducted all five choirs in the 1999 Choir Festival of the Aghia Paraskevi Municipality, during the opening day of the festival.
Since 2001, Kloggas has conducted the Panhellenic Association’s choir in several masses and Salutations to the Theotokos at the Faneromeni Cathedral in Cholargos, harmonizing Sakellarides’ compositions, as well as the Song of Kassiani at the Eleftherotria Cathedral in Politeia.
Kloggas has been a member of the H.C.A. since 2004, and has served as General Secretary in the past.
Currently, and on top of his duties as choirmaster, director, and professor of music (Theory and Composition), Kloggas composes works in a variety of genres (orchestra, choir, various chamber ensembles, etc.), as well as setting poems by Cavafy, Karyotakis, and Seferis to music. He has also participated in composition competitions, such as the Ithaca Festival, Olympia (Greek National Radio), and the Athens Conservatory’s.
Further, Kloggas has written books on Choral Repertory, Music Theory and Harmony, Form, etc. He has also translated books, such as Dubois’ Harmony and Counterpoint (published by Nicolaides, 2010) and Widor’s Orchestration.
